1. What “Ecology of Mind” Means

The concept of an ecology of mind originates primarily from the work of Gregory Bateson, particularly in his book Steps to an Ecology of Mind. Bateson challenged the conventional view that mind is contained solely within an individual brain. Instead, he proposed that cognition arises within networks of relationships connecting organisms, environments, and systems of communication.

In this framework, mind is understood as a distributed process rather than a bounded entity. Cognitive activity emerges through patterns of interaction—between individuals, between organisms and their surroundings, and through the exchange of information across systems.

Several principles characterize Bateson’s idea of an ecology of mind:

Rather than functioning as isolated models, these systems operate through coordinated networks of agents that exchange signals, update their behavior, and adapt collectively. The intelligence of the system therefore emerges from the structure of interactions within the network.

Common forms of collective AI include:

At the level of individual AI, intelligence is concentrated within a single model. Multi-agent systems introduce interaction between agents.
